In the changing social milieu, the need for alternate living arrangements for the chronic mentally ill, away from their immediate family both as a process of psycho-social rehabilitation and a compelling family necessity is being increasingly recognised.
An overview of the campus

Considering the need for providing a "Home away from home" for the mentally disabled, Cadabam'S started a residential care centre in Nov.1992, to provide short and long term residential psycho-social rehab and care for the chronic mentally ill in Bangalore, in memory of Late Amitha M.Cadabam, a mentally retarded child, who died at a untimely age of 23, in a rented premises near Konankunte on Kanakapura road. In 1997 the centre was shifted to its own premises. The new campus spread over a sprawling 18 acre of land is located on, Bangalore-kanakapura main road, about 20kms from the famous Banashankari Temple, Bangalore.

The home at present has around 150 residents both men and women, of different age groups, hailing from all over the country and some NRI's as well. The Home is ideally located in rural Bangalore, away from dust and din of the metropolis, amidst lush greenery and agricultural lands, providing a very healthy, clean unpolluted peaceful atmosphere bringing solace to the mind and body, alike. Cadabam's team of professionals and para professionals are guided by its Medical Director Dr.S.M.Channabasavanna Prof.Emeritus & former Director and Vice Chancellor, NIMHANS and work under his direction. Ms.M.K.Saraswathi a qualified psychologist is the Administrator of the Home and is one of the Trustees.

"Cadabam'S is approved by the Government of Karnataka as a licensed Rehabilitation Centre under Mental Health act 1987".(Mrs)Sudha R.Cadabam actively associates her self in the internal administration of the Home, particularly in planning the menu, purchase of personal needs of Residents, House keeping etc.,and is affectionate "Aunty" to the Residents and staff members of our organisation.

She has been the main support to Mr.C.M.Ramesh and has stood by him all these years.

Cadabam'S considers itself very fortunate to have Dr.S.M.Channabasavanna as it's Medical Director. A Pre-eminent Psychiatrist, he brings with him several decades of experience in Mental Health Management to the advantage of our Residents. As a member of many National & International bodies in Mental Health Care, he has enhanced the reputation of Cadabam'S.

His expertise in Mental Health area, not only in the field of Psychiatry, but also in Administration & Management has benefitted Cadabam'S in many ways. The credit for introduction of Training in Psychiatric Nursing for students of Nursing, confirming to the syllabus of Indian Nursing Council and Cadabam,s getting recognition by the Karnataka State Nursing, Council, introduction of short term rehabilitation Care goes in a large measure to him. Family Counselling as a vital ingredient of Psychosocial rehabilitation, and as minimum a Medication as possible are all-marks of his psycho-therapy.

Ms.Saraswati, in our formative years and through out these days has brought professionalism in the administration. She has established the principles and practices in almost all areas of residential Care, which have stood the test of time and stand validated. Her stead fast devotion to the cause of cadabam's is exemplary and the families of all our residents seek her help, advice & Solace. In 1997 when we moved over to our new campus, another centre for Mentally ill was opened in the old premises. Mr.A.R.R.Rao & Mrs.Rajamani R.Rao volunteered to take charge of that center and they continue to be on our board of Management as Directors.

By their affable nature & almost instinctive concern for others, they have endeared themselves to all our residents, presenting a parental image. For most of the families of Residents, the Rao's are their alter-ego.

For the residents, Mrs.Rao occupies the place of their mother in Cadabam'S. They share with her their Joys and Sorrows, their problems and predicaments. When they talk to her they feel comforted. The families too have the same regard towards her.

The old centre was closed in 2001 and all the residents who were there have been accomodated in this campus, and happily the Rao's association also has continued.

Mr.Ananthrag Yalamuri is the youngest member of the Management team. His young age finds instant acceptance by the youthful residents of the Home. They rush to him for any thing they want whether it is change in the Menu or extension of T.V.Time during Cricket Season. All residents will be particularly happy when he is in dining hall on special occassions. They are sure to get choicest dishes on that day. He is versatile too and on many accessions he doubles as electrician - T.V.mechanic - Plumber - Driver - a virtual jack of all. His asset is in creating a team spirit amongst all whether in celebrating a festival or cleaning the vast campus.

Our counsellors work in perfect unison and their team work, unity of approach, dedication to the cause and devotion to the organisation has won the confidence of the families. For their clients, they are friend-guide and philosophers. The visiting professionals have appreciated them. Cadabam'S owes it's success in no small measures to our past and present team of counsellors. Mr.Kamlesh Verma Senior Counsellor deserves a special mention for his steadfast loyalty and hard work.
Maintenance of the Home
Cadabam'S is sustained and supported by the deposits and maintenance fees paid by the parents and families. As a matter of deliberate policy we do not accept donations nor do we take Govt.Grants, which makes us to be absolutely independent, answerable only to the parents/guardians of residents who pay the prescribed cost of maintenance. Thus we are not in fetters to any third party.
